1. Choose a builder who specialises in renovations rather than new builds
Building a new home from scratch is a very different experience to renovating – and a lot of builders specialise in one or the other.
A builder who regularly completes renovations will have more knowledge and experience of how to deal with renovation specific issues and processes.
Here at Kwaliteit Constructions, we have years of experience in home renovations and extensions that are tailored to each client. We understand well that you never know what issues you might come across once you start to peel back the surface of an existing house. With our expertise, we’re equipped to deal with them when they come about.
2. Check out their portfolio of projects
When choosing a builder, have a look at their previous projects – do you like what you see?
Chat to the builder and ask about their most recent renovations – including whether or not they have completed projects that are similar to yours. Do they regularly renovate homes of the same size, with similar budgets, and work with similar materials you have chosen for your build?
3. Choose a builder who communicates well
Communication can make or break a renovation project. Chat to potential builders about how they’ll keep you in the loop during the build. Will there be regular site meetings where you can visit your house and ask questions about progress? Will they be contactable and respond in a timely manner so you’re not left wondering about how your project is tracking?
By gauging the communication levels of your builder, you can be assured that you’ll be kept up to date, you’ll receive the information you need and you’ll be clear of priorities from the start.
4. Choose the right price, not the cheapest
The cheapest quote may not necessarily be the best, and choosing a builder solely based on price may come back to haunt you and your house. While it may be more enticing to go with the least expensive option, ensuring your project will be completed to a good quality is just as important when deciding on which builder.
5. Choose a builder you can trust
While this one can be hard to gauge before your project begins, there are things you can tick off to give your chosen builder the stamp of approval. Chat about what transparency checks and balances they have in place to ensure they build with integrity and honesty. Will they contact you when problems arise? Will they be clear about costs and processes?
